All 50 states are on the lemon law by state list.

California's consumer affairs guide counts 4 visits, or 2 for a defect that could kill or injure, or more than 30 days. The problem must first show up within 18 months or 18,000 miles.

What a buyback pays you

A buyback refunds what you paid, minus a charge for the miles you drove before the first repair. Your attorney works out that charge from your contract and your state's rule. The buyback calculator runs the math for the states that publish a formula.

Who pays the lawyer?

The carmaker, when you win. The federal warranty law lets an owner recover "court costs and reasonable attorneys' fees," per the FTC. That is why the review is free and there is no fee unless you win.

Questions owners ask

What does a lemon law lawyer cost me?

Nothing up front. Federal warranty law and many state laws make the carmaker pay the attorney fees when you win, so there is no fee unless you win. See lemon law lawyer cost.

How many repairs make a car a lemon?

Most states count 3 or 4 repair visits for the same problem, or about 30 days in the shop, early in the car's life. Your state page has the exact numbers.

Does lemon law cover used cars?

In some states, under conditions. Elsewhere the federal warranty law can cover a used car sold with a written warranty. See used car lemon law.

Do I need a lawyer near me?

You need a lemon law attorney licensed in the state where you bought the car. The office does not have to be in your town.
